Homemade Shampoo Recipe

I have long, thick hair that takes forever to wash and makes me run through bottles of shampoo and conditioner very quickly. As we all know shampoo and conditioner aren't exactly cheap depending on the type that you buy. I did some research and found some homemade shampoo recipes to try. I found one that worked fairly well for me and made a few modifications to make it more what I was looking for. This shampoo uses coconut oil for the moisturizing component and essential oils for the fragrance. Here is my recipe:

Coconut Milk Shampoo:

1 16oz container

1 1/4 cup coconut milk

3/4 cup unscented liquid castile soap

1 tsp avocado oil

2 tsp vitamin E

30 drops Rosemary essential oil

25 drops Peppermint essential oil

10 drops Tea Tree essential oil

MIx the coconut milk, avocado oil, vitamin E first, then add the castile soap. Add the essential oils last. Make sure everything is well mixed and pour into your container. Shake it well before each use.

****This product has to remain refrigerated due to the coconut milk, if left out it will expire and smell HORRIBLE.

I learned that the hard way when I was first switching to this recipe since it is not second nature to go get your shampoo out of the fridge before you shower.

You can use whatever brand of coconut milk you would like, but it should be some kind that is canned. The avocado oil can be substituted for olive oil, argan oil or coconut oil, however, I have found that for me, the others make my hair a little greasy.

There is one side note that I would like to mention; If you are thinking of switching to all natural homemade hair care products, there will be a short period of time where your hair will be greasy, this is because your hair is starting to reset its natural oils that have been stripped by the chemicals in typical hair care products. Just be patient! It's so worth it, once you have all the ingredients on hand it is significantly cheaper to make your own than it is to buy.

Have fun making this and give it the time it needs to work for you!
